Special Olympics of Maryland
The Special Olympics of Maryland is a non-profit
organization based in Columbia, Maryland. Its mission is to provide athletic
training and competition for those with intellectual disabilities through
Olympic-type sports. Those eight years and older who participate are given
the chance to develop both physical fitness as well as courage and character
with the hope of being brought into the larger society as accepted and
respected individuals. These athletes are given the opportunity to find joy
in the sharing of skills and friendships with not only other athletes, but
families and members of the community as well.

S. June Smith Center
The S. June Smith Center aims to provide early
resources for those children with developmental disabilities as well as their
families. The Center was named for S. June Smith, a pioneer for children
with special needs in Lancaster County, PA, and a National Officer of Alpha
Sigma Alpha. A variety of programs are offered for children with
developmental disabilities, from infancy to preschool, that allow them to
interact with other children and learn through individualized education
plans. Resources are available for families and the community so that all
children have equal opportunities.

Fish Pong
One of the highlights of the year for the Epsilon Tau
chapter of Alpha Sigma Alpha is Fish Pong. This is a twenty-four hour charity
event, during which each sister dedicates her time (even after midnight!) to
help out. Contestants donate money and are allowed three shots to throw a
ping-pong ball into a series of cups; if they make a shot, they will win
either a goldfish or a Betta fish, depending on the amount donated. The
event is a ton of fun and a huge hit across campus. Proceeds benefit the
Special Olympics of Maryland and the S. June Smith Center.

Mr. UMBC
Each year, the Epsilon Tau chapter of Alpha Sigma Alpha
hosts our biggest charity event, Mr. UMBC, and it continues to be a huge hit on
campus! Male UMBC students volunteer to participate as contestants in this
"beauty pageant" (of sorts). The contestants compete in different categories -
formal wear, swim wear, talent, and questions. The event is also accompanied by
a basket auction and a date auction. All proceeds go directly to our two
philanthropies. This past year, in Fall 2011, the event raised over $600!
